Cynthia Erivo and Lena Waithe made a splash together while attending the NAACP Awards on Saturday, February 22.
Erivo, who wore HardWear earrings, Jean Schlumberger by Tiffany brooches, a Sixteen Stone ring and a ring in platinum featuring a green tourmaline and diamonds, was nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in the hit movie Wicked.
The outing came amid engagement rumors that sparked after Erivo was spotted wearing a giant diamond ring on that finger at the Grammy Awards. (It was later revealed that the ring was not an engagement ring, and the pair have not made any public announcements regarding the future of their relationship.)
Erivo also made headlines after she was photographed sharing a seat with Taylor Swift at this year’s Grammys. The giggling pair used the moment to reenact Erivo and Ariana Grande’s viral “holding space” moment from their whirlwind Wicked press tour.
Erivo and Waithe have never publicly confirmed their relationship, but it’s believed they’ve been dating since 2020 – before Waithe and ex-wife Alana Mayo filed for divorce 10 months after they got married.
“After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” the pair’s representative told Us Weekly in January 2021. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
Waithe and Mayo wed in San Francisco in secret. “We snuck and did it,” the Master of None alum told The Ellen DeGeneres Show guest host John Legend in November 2019, while showing off her wedding ring. “You know, we didn’t make any announcements.”
Only weeks before the announcement, Waithe told Us that she and Mayo were working on finding balance in their marriage. “Now it’s like, I think we’re just doing the best we can, trying to figure it out. Nobody has all the answers, you know what I’m saying?”
“It’s just like, OK, I think this is what is needed now, you know what I mean?” she continued. “I think as you get older and you mature, you try and figure things out. But yeah, it’s like one of those life things that you do, and you hope you get it right.”
Erivo will next be seen in the second installment in the Wicked franchise, Wicked: For Good. She will also star in the film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone. The 2018 book by author Tomi Adeyemi debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list. The movie will also star Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Violet Davis, and more. Erivo will play Admiral Kaea, who is opposed to the maji, citizens who have magical powers.
