Turki Alalshikh said today that he’ll reveal a “surprise” about who will promote and which platform will show “the big fight” between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford after May 3rd.
Netflix & TKO
It’s already been leaked that Turki’s TKO Boxing will promote the event and be shown on Netflix. What fans care about more is the price. Who promotes and which platform doesn’t matter, as long as the price is low, especially for celebrity matches like Canelo vs. Crawford.
That match is more non-sporting, given that Crawford has never fought at 168, hasn’t earned a title shot the traditional way, and doesn’t intend to remain in the weight class afterward. In other words, Terence is a weight class tourist, visiting only for his golden parachute retirement payday.
Turki says the Canelo-Crawford will be the biggest “fight in the history of boxing,” which is going a little overboard. Terence isn’t very popular, though, and this is NOT the fight that U.S fans have been calling for involving Canelo.
They haven’t been pushing for the Mexican star Alvarez to fight the 38-year-old Crawford. American fans want Canelo to fight David Benavidez. Crawford is not popular and never has been.
Fan Indifference
People aren’t asking for Canelo to cherry pick an old guy from the 154-lb division. He already did that in 2023 when he fought former undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo, and it was a complete mismatch.
Canelo’s distant past fights against Gennadiy Golovkin were all bigger matches than the Crawford bout will be. The reason is that Terence is NOT popular, and he never has been. Look at his past PPV history. His only successful fight on PPV was against Errol Spence in 2023, and that was because of Errol.
There’s not much Turki can do to make Canelo-Crawford the “biggest fight in history,” because it’s too late. Crawford is old, and he’s physically incapable of moving up to 168 to prove himself first by running the gauntlet through Benavidez, David Morrell and Diego Pacheco.
If Turki really wanted to make Canelo vs. Crawford fight the biggest in the sport, he would insist that Terence fight those three guys. If he comes out victorious, it might be the biggest fight in the history if he were to fight Canelo. Terence is too old, small, and weak to beat any of the three fighters. Moreover, Crawford barely beat Israil Madrimov in his last fight at 154, and he looked like a fossil from the Mesozoic period of the dinosaurs.
Ultra-hardcore fans will get excited about this news, but it doesn’t matter to the average person who follows the sport. They don’t care who promotes or which platform the Canelo-Crawford fight will be shown on. Those interested in this fight will only care about the price tag.
Biggest Fight Ever?
“After the third of May, we will announce the details about the Canelo and Crawford fight, the big fight in the history of boxing,” said Turki Alalshikh today on X Spaces, to talk about his plans for different fights, one of them being the Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford spectacle on September 13th in Las Vegas.
“We will not announce it until the 3rd [before Canelo’s fight against IBF super middleweight champion William Scull], all the details, and there will be a surprise about who the promoter will be for this big fight and the platform you will see the big fight.
“Canelo will want to focus on his dangerous fight [Scull] on the third of May, and after that, we will talk about the future,” said Turki.
