Edgar Berlanga wants the big names in his next fight as a free agent following his first round knockout victory over Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz last Saturday night at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
The performance would have been meaningful if Berlanga (23-0, 18 KOs) were facing one of the killers in the 168 or 175 lb division, but this guy was 100% a tomato can. It was embarrassing that his management used this guy as an opponent in a co-feature bout.
The “Bag” Factor
If Berlanga’s entire focus for his career is to “get the bag,” he should target David Benavidez, because that would give him a big payday if his management can get the fight. When Berlanga loses that fight, the backlash won’t be as bad as it would if Caleb Plant or Jaime Munguia beat him.
The Brooklyn, New York native, Berlanga, says his goal is to get a rematch with Canelo Alvarez, but he will NOT do that by beating Plant, Munguia or the inactive Jermall Charlo. He needs a win over David Benavidez, David Morrell, or Osleys Iglesias for him to have any shot.
After the fight, Berlanga told DAZN that he wants one of these three:
- Jaime Munguia
- Jermall Charlo
- Caleb Plant
The more realistic of those three is Plant (23-2, 14 KOs) because that’s who the fans and promoters want. Munguia was recently knocked out by Bruno Surace, which makes him a poor candidate for Edgar Berlanga. Moreover, for fans who know the sport, Munguia is a manufactured fighter, a guy who has been matched against weak opposition his entire career to get a big cash-out fight against Canelo Alvarez.
Fake Records?
If that was the goal for Munguia’s career, it worked, but he was beaten and his last performance proved that he was never as good as his inflated record showed. He’s like a mirrored image of Berlanga in terms of how he’s been matched to build a plastic record to make him look like 24k gold. It’s marketing 101 on how to build a product that looks good on the outside, but is deeply flawed and falls apart as soon as it’s put in use.
Charlo (33-0, 22 KOs) hasn’t fought in two years, and he’s about to turn 35 in May. Whatever motivation he ever had about his career is gone and it’s not coming back.
“I’m on a different level now. I’m going to do the same thing to Plant, Munguia, Charlo. I got dynamite in these hands. Like what Floyd Mayweather told me. ‘You got dynamite in those hands, just let them s*** fly; nobody is going to stand there with you. You hit too hard, you’re too smart. IQ,’” said Edgar Berlanga to iFL TV following his victory over Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz last Saturday night in front of a small crowd in Orlando, Florida.
