Bantamweight ‘Gucci’ Manny Flores knocked out Jorge ‘Zurdo’ Leyva in four rounds on Thursday night at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.
Flores, 20-1 (16) knocked out southpaw Leyva, 18-4 (13) at 0:55 of the fourth round of a scheduled 10 rounds.
In the first round, it was close until a little over a minute when Flores landed a right cross on Leyva’s chin, knocking him back several steps. In the second round Flores landed a 3-punch combination controlling the round over Leyva. In the third round with a little more than forty seconds remaining Flores landed a straight left on the chin, dropping Leyva for an 8-count from referee Ray Corona.
In the fourth rounds first minute a lead left from Flores to the body dropped Leyva to his knees for the count from Referee Corona.
In the co-feature in a very impressive performance, super weltereight Grant Flores, 9-0 (7) stopped LaQuan ‘Cue’ Evans, 5-4 (2) at 1:18 of the second round of a scheduled six rounds.
In the first round, it was give-and-take, as both fighters had their moments. In the second round, Flores came out looking to end it, landing twelve unanswered punches before Referee Ray Armendariz stepped in to stop it, as Evans was out on his feet.
Heavyweight Federico Pacheco, Jr., 8-0 (6) knocked out Arnulfo Cazares, 2-5 (2) at 1:46 of the fourth and final round.
In the first round, giving up over 80 pounds to Pacheco, Cazares, having been inactive for two years, comes in over 50 pounds lower than his last fight. Cazares moved his head enough to avoid most of the punches of Cazares and finally landed one of his own in the final seconds. In the second round, Cazares slipped to the canvas and, while down, was hit twice by Pacheco without a warning from Referee Ray Corona.
In the third’s final minute, Pacheco was landing well, having Cazares against the ropes, when Cazares landed a solid left hook to the chin, but was countered by a Pacheco right. In the fourth and final round, Pacheco landed ten unanswered punches, forcing referee Corona to call a halt as the towel came in from the corner of Cazares.
Lightweight Johnny Canas, 7-0 (2) defeated Jesus ‘Diamante’ Perez, 14-20-1 (8) by a six round unanimous decision, committing numerous low blows.
After a close first round won by Canas at the midway point of the second round, Perez rocked Canas with a right on the chin. In the third round’s midway point, Canas dropped Perez with a low right, getting a warning from Referee Ray Armendariz. Before the round was over, Canas was warned two more times.
In the fourth round, a left from Canas went low with yet another warning. What is the referee waiting for without taking a point from Canas? In the final minute, an accidental right drop Perez. In the fifth round, with a minute remaining, Canas landed a pair of rights to the chin of Perez. In the final seconds Perez landed a left hook to the chin of Canas. In the sixth and final rounds, the final seconds, Canas rocked Perez with a right on the chin. Canas was fortunate not to lose by DQ.
The scores were 60-54, 60-54 and 60-54.
Welterweight Olympian Ruslan Abdullaev, 1-0 (1) stopped Jose Alvarado, 3-19-2 (2) 2:33 of the second round of a scheduled four rounds. It was the first time Alvarado was stopped.
In the first round Abdullaev landed good body shots taking the round. In the second round with forty seconds remaining Abdullaev countered a right miss from Alvarado and landed a vicious left to the body dropping Alvarado who spit out his mouthpiece on his knees for the count from Referee Cameron Frizzell.
