Brenda Song got the best present during Christmas 2021 when her now-fiancé, Macaulay Culkin, popped the question.
“He gave me a bunch of really weird presents, like, 21 individually wrapped gnomes, which I thought was a joke because we had so many in our garden,” Song, 36, recalled to The Times of London in a profile published on Saturday, March 1. “Another present was a box of Amazon stuff I said I’d return for him. I was like, ‘I’m not getting this joke.’”
She added, “Then the last present was a letter written ‘from’ [our son] Dakota, like, ‘Papa is such a bad gift-giver, here’s something better to give Mom.’ And then he was down on one knee, proposing. He was like, ‘I wanted to lower your expectations.’ Which he did! But it was very sweet and very us. We’re big kids.”
Song and Culkin, 44, have been together since 2019 and share sons Dakota, 3, and Carson, 2. Becoming parents also helped bring the couple even closer.
“He’s good at lifting me up on a down day,” Song gushed to The Times. “My favorite treat will just show up, or flowers that say ‘just because’ or he’ll turn down the monitor [and get up with the kids] so I sleep in. I’ve never had someone tell me how much they appreciate me.”
Song and Culkin, while both former child actors, met years later in 2019 on the set of Seth Green’s Changeland.
“When we met neither of us were looking for a relationship,” Song recalled to the newspaper. “We had loads of downtime just hanging out and I was like, ‘Is he going to be my set BFF? Awesome!’ And then I got a crush on him and I was like, ‘Is he going to be my first fling?’ When we flew back to L.A. I literally said, ‘See you never!’ But that fling somehow turned into eight years and two kids together.”
According to Song, part of what makes her and Culkin’s enduring romance last is never picking a fight.
“What’s the point? Yelling won’t get my point across any better, and he feels the same way,” she stressed. “Once the kids are in bed, that’s our time together and we talk.”
Song and Culkin have since settled their brood in the Valley neighborhood of Los Angeles.
“We live in the Valley. I love being a Valley girl and I’m going to die a Valley girl,” the Running Point star joked. “We’ve got this wonderful, quiet neighborhood where the boys get to play soccer and we have a dinner club with our neighbors. We’re so fortunate. You know what it’s like, it takes a tribe.”
She added, “Jesse Plemons, a dear friend, lives down the road from me. Our kids are the same age, they go to swim class together. And, you know, Kirsten [Dunst, Plemons’ wife] and Mack both grew up in New York and they get each other because of that. Mack and I appreciate the life that we’ve built.”
