Until Daisy Ridley picks up her yellow lightsaber once again, any time she releases a movie, she’s going to be asked about Rey. She can play a swimmer, she can play a window cleaner, it doesn’t matter. People want to know what’s going on with Star Wars.
Ridley is currently promoting a movie called Cleaner (where she literally plays a window cleaner who just so happens to be ex-military) and so she’s once again having to provide an update on the Rey movie. First announced back in 2023, the Lucasfilm project is set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and brings back Ridley as Rey, who’ll work to create a new Jedi order. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is directing and while several writers, and we do mean several, have tackled the project, the latest one to come on board is George Nolfi (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Adjustment Bureau, Ocean’s 12, Elevation).
Speaking to ComicBook, Ridley had nothing but praise for Nofli, though she hasn’t read his work yet. “I have not read the latest script, but I know what’s happening, and I know the story, and I think what feels really good is that George is a phenomenal writer,” she said. “I think we’re making sure that this story is the best way, this script is the best way to tell the story, and I think it will be worthwhile for everyone watching it, and I am very excited, yeah.”
That sounds good! The story is good, the writer is good, they’re taking their time, and that’s the deal. She added another wrinkle talking to Screenrant, revealing she’s got another movie coming up so the Rey movie isn’t the next thing she’s working on. “I don’t think it’ll be the next thing I go to production on because I’m supposed to be doing—oh no, it’s not, because I’m doing something next month, very excitingly,” Ridley said. “So it’s not the next thing production-wise, but the script is being written and I’m very excited.”
Did you hear she’s excited? We’re excited too! Collider took a slightly different spin with the star, asking about how involved she is behind the scenes with the film. This is a little less on message but, can you blame her? She’s doing a fantastic job talking about something she contractually shouldn’t be talking about.
“I don’t know that I’d be a producer on it, but I certainly have been very involved,” Ridley said. “I’m involved in, well, not very involved, but I’m involved in as much as I know what’s going on, I know the story, I know what’s going on with the script, so I’m aware of all that. And I think what’s been really wonderful over the last few years is being more involved from the start to finish, really coming to set knowing this is the absolute best way we can tell this story. These are the best actors for the job. This is the best crew for the job. Having that confidence is so lovely. And it’s not that I didn’t have that before, but I’m much more cognizant of it now. So in that way, I’m looking forward to turning up, really knowing the ins and outs of what the journey has been, and we’re arriving at the absolute best place to tell this particular story.”
And, really, all jokes aside, that’s all we want. The best possible movie. And if the movie isn’t going to be great, then don’t make it. Don’t further tarnish any Star Wars legacies. It certainly sounds like Ridley is aware of all that and trying her hardest to be— yes—excited about the possibilities.
The next Star Wars movie to hit theaters will be The Mandalorian and Grogu in summer 2026. We don’t know what’s next after that, though it could be this movie, it could be Shawn Levy’s movie, or something else. Unclear, the future is.
