The New York State Athletic Commission is reviewing the events that transpired during the ninth round of last Saturday night’s fight between WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach in Brooklyn, New York.

Technical Glitch?

According to a Commission spokesperson, they couldn’t review the ninth-round incident because they had “technical issues” with the replay. This couldn’t have come at a worse time in the fight. It’s happening in that round, which saved Tank from losing the battle, and it could have cost Roach millions.

They’re looking at the point in the ninth where Tank Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) voluntarily took a knee after getting hit hard by a right hand and a left jab to the head by Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs).

“During the round in question, following the commission’s request for the replay video, there was a technical issue preventing the commission from receiving it within the allotted time for review. Therefore, the referee’s in-ring decision was relied upon and the fight continued,” a New York Commission spokesperson told ESPN, about the ninth round of the Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach fight last Saturday night.

No Mas?

The punch seemed to bother Tank enough to where he looked like he was about to say, ‘No mas.’ Instead, he motioned to the referee and walked to his corner in what many felt was him quitting. There was no debate that Davis had gone down after being punched.

That was there for everyone to see. The referee was supposed to rule it a knockdown and disqualify Tank when he walked to his corner to have his face wiped.

Referee Steve Willis’ failure to make the call on Gervonta taking a knee in the ninth resulted in the fight being ruled a 12 round majority draw. The scores were 115-113 for Tank, 114-114 and 114-114.

It saved Tank Davis from losing the bout, but it also resulted in Willis being widely criticized by fans. Now, the Commission could reverse his mistake if they choose to rule it a knockdown.
