Ryan Garcia insists that he wasn’t on PEDs when he thrashed Devin Haney last April, and he sees that as a case of him trying to whitewash what happened to him that night. Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) explains that the REAL problem for Devin was his ineptness at blocking his left hook, which he hit him with all night.
Real Reason?
Haney’s chin proved fragile, as he could not handle the heavy shots from Ryan, and had to get up off the canvas three times. He was down twice more, but the referee Harvey Dock didn’t count them. That was in the seventh round, which was the beginning of the end for San Francisco native.
Kingry wants to finish the job against Haney in October, but first things first. He’s got to take care of Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on Turki Alalshikh’s May 2nd Fatal Fury event at Times Square in New York City. Unfortunately, Haney might not make it to the October fight against Garcia, as he’s got to beat former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Jose Ramirez on the May 2nd card.
Ramirez was once the King of the 140-lb division, but losses to Josh Taylor and Arnold Barboza Jr, both close affairs, have dimmed his star power. The shots that Taylor and Barboza Jr. took from Ramirez would give Haney many problems.
I don’t think those kinds of punches will work, no matter how much running and clinching he does. The negative style, nonstop holding game plan that worked for Devin against George Kambosos twice won’t be as effective against Ramirez. But assuming Haney does make it past Ramirez, he’ll have Ryan waiting for him in October, which could end badly for Dev and his dad, Bill Haney.
Why Blame PEDs?
“Because I know I didn’t take steroids, it’s not going to be much different. The crazy thing is, they [Haney] want to keep on saying, ‘Oh, it’s because of the PEDs. I was fighting a guy that was on PEDs,’” said Ryan Garcia to Ring Magazine, talking about Devin Haney and his dad, Bill Haney, mentioning during interviews that he was on PEDs during the fight on April 20th last year.
“PEDs don’t help you block a left hook. He didn’t block any of it, and he got his a** handed to him. I guess, for me, it’s just proving I’ll do it again. It was pretty one-sided,” said Garcia about his fight with Haney.
