Gwyneth Paltrow Slammed for Controversial Intimacy Coordinator Remarks

Gwyneth Paltrow is receiving some pushback following her comments about intimacy coordinators.

Caroline Hollick, a film producer and executive, slammed Paltrow’s nonchalant stance about using an intimacy coordinator for her upcoming film with Timothée Chalamet. Hollick addressed the remarks during a panel titled “Let’s Talk About Sex! (And Consent)” at the drama festival Series Mania on Tuesday, March 25.

“Every now and then an actor makes a comment over whether they like intimacy coordinators or not,” Hollick said on Tuesday, per Deadline. “Gwyneth Paltrow said she grew up in a time when [actors] ‘took our kit off and got on with it.’ As a powerful woman in Hollywood acting with a man much younger than her, well I’m sure [Chalamet] is chill but I thought it was quite an irresponsible thing to say.”

Hollick continued her discussion by highlighting the benefits actors receive when working with a trusted professional during their more intimate scenes.

Brad Falchuk is unfazed by Gwyneth Paltrow locking lips with Timothée Chalamet on the set of Marty Supreme. “How does Brad feel about you kissing Mr. Chalamet?! Lol,” a user wrote in a Tuesday, October 22, Q&A on Paltrow’s Instagram Story. Paltrow, 52, replied, “Unthreatened, not because T. Chal isn’t AWESOME, but he knows he’s […]

“Bringing an intimacy coordinator on set empowers an actor because there is someone on [their] side who is there to fight for them,” she explained. “Producers have an agenda, writers have an agenda and directors have an agenda. So having someone to back the performer is important.”

Earlier this month, Paltrow, 52, discussed her and Chalamet’s movie, Marty Supreme, in an interview with Vanity Fair. The actress teased there was “a lot of sex” in the film and broached the subject of working with an intimacy coordinator.

“There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed,” she said, adding that an intimacy coordinator on set asked if she’d be comfortable with a particular position. “I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.’”

Paltrow doubled down on her remarks and revealed that she and Chalamet opted not to use the professional while filming the scenes.

“We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back,’” Paltrow recalled to the outlet. “I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but … if someone is like, ‘OK, and then he’s going to put his hand here’ — she lays a milky-manicured hand on her own shoulder — ‘I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that.’”

Marty Supreme is a dramedy that tells a fictionalized interpretation of the life of table tennis champion Marty Reisman. Chalamet stars as the athlete while Paltrow plays his love interest. The film is produced and directed by Josh Safdie. In addition to Chalamet and Paltrow, the cast includes Tyler, the Creator, Fran Drescher and Sandra Bernhard. Marty Supreme is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25.
