Harry Styles might have been running from the bullets in “Sign of the Times,” but now he’s racing for glory on the marathon track.
Styles, 31, was spotted participating in the annual Tokyo Marathon on Saturday, March 1, via now-viral footage shared on social media.
In a video circulating on X, Styles was seen running incognito during the race, sporting a black Nike hoodie, matching shorts, neon-yellow sneakers and a pair of sunglasses. He also wore a white bandana to hold back his hair and was seen sporting a mustache.
Styles finished the race in just over three hours with his net time — the period between crossing the start line to the finish — ringing in at a total of 3:24:07. According to his official entry on the runner’s website, Styles kept an average pace of 4:51/km and was ranked 6,010 overall.
Styles — who famously keeps a low profile when he’s not performing — has not publicly addressed his experience running the Tokyo race, though has previously been candid about the importance of self-care.
“I’ve got very tight hamstrings — trying to get those open,” Styles told Vogue in a 2020 profile of his frequent Pilates workouts, also highlighting his daily medication practices. “It has changed my life, but it’s so subtle. It’s helped me just be more present. I feel like I’m able to enjoy the things that are happening right in front of me, even if it’s food or it’s coffee or it’s being with a friend — or a swim in a really cold pond.”
He continued, “Meditation just brings a stillness that has been really beneficial, I think, for my mental health.”
Styles also frequently works out with trainer Thibo David, who told Coach magazine in January 2024 that the Grammy winner can run a five-minute mile.
“Don’t go in thinking ‘He did it in five minutes, I’m going to do the same’, just keep on pushing,” David told the outlet. “Don’t think about anything else, your time is yours. …Collaborating with Harry Styles was an absolute delight. His commitment is unparalleled.”
According to David, his workouts with Styles “depend on the day and the state of the athlete.”
“It’s important to note that this level of training isn’t suitable for everyone,” David stressed. “Harry was inherently fit, but achieving the level of fitness needed for this session still required time, work and effort. Rushing into such high-volume workouts can pose risks.”
He added, “Not every day constituted an intense session. In fact, we strategically incorporated recovery sessions which often involved a light run combined with core exercises and mobility work. Every workout was thoughtfully placed within the overall training plan.”
