Princess Beatrice of York and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi welcomed their second child together on Wednesday, January 22.

Buckingham Palace shared news of the birth in a statement to Us Weekly one week later on Wednesday, January 29, and revealed that the couple had named their daughter Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi.

Athena has not yet been added to the line of succession on the royal family’s website; however, she is expected to be named 11th in line to the British throne behind Beatrice and Edoardo’s eldest daughter, Sienna, who was born in September 2021. (Edoardo also has a son, Christopher Woolf ‘Woolfie’ Mapelli Mozzi, born in 2016 from a previous relationship with Dara Huang.)

Princess Beatrice found her prince in businessman Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi after being introduced by a mutual friend. Us Weekly confirmed in November 2018 that the couple were dating. After three years together, the duo secretly wed in July 2020. “Every second of every day since has been so full of joy, happiness, laughter and love. […]

Athena’s arrival will place Beatrice’s younger sister, Princess Eugenie, back one place to 12th in line. Eugenie’s children, August (born in February 2021) and Ernest (born in May 2023) will be pushed back to 13th and 14th place respectively.

This also means that King Charles’ youngest brother, Prince Edward, 60, will move from 14th to 15th place in the line of succession. Edward’s children, James, Earl of Wessex, 17, and The Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, 21, will move to 16th and 17th place respectively.

Charles’ sister Princess Anne, 74, will also be affected. Anne — known as the U.K.’s “hardest working royal” — will move from 17th to 18th place in line to the throne.

Prince William, 42, is first in line to the throne, closely followed by his children, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

Prince Harry, 40, is fifth in line, followed by his own children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3. Prince Andrew, 64, is eighth in line while Beatrice, 36, is ninth in line.

Like her older sister, Beatrice’s new baby is unlikely to have a royal title.

As Beatrice and Edoardo aren’t working royals, baby Athena will most likely be a private citizen and will not be expected to undertake official duties as she gets older.

“Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born on Wednesday, 22nd January, at 12:57pm, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday, January 29.

“The baby was born weighing 4 pounds and 5 ounces,” the statement said. “Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family have all been informed and are delighted with the news.”
