Ilona Maher is very close with her mom and her sisters — so much so that she called them after she lost her virginity in her 20s.
“I called mom the day after I lost my virginity,” Ilona, 28, shared on an episode of her and sisters Olivia Maher and Adrianna Maher’s “House of Maher” podcast, a Wave Original series. on Tuesday, March 25.
Olivia, 30, corrects Ilona calling it her “sexual debut,” adding, “You didn’t lose anything.”
The Olympic rugby player agreed with her, noting that before calling her mom, Mieneke Maher, she hit up her sister Olivia’s girl chat to share the news.
“I was in a parking lot and we were like, ‘Yeah!!!!” Olivia recalled.
Ilona added that she remembered it “vividly” before going on to share the story of how she let her mom know over the phone about losing her virginity.

“We had family over, I was like, ‘Mom, I gotta talk to you,’” she explained. “She’s like, ‘Alright, I’ll go upstairs.’ She goes upstairs to the bathroom and I’m like, ‘Mom, I lost my virginity.’ And she was like, ‘OK. Wow.’”
The athlete went on to say that this was in her 20s and she remembered telling her mom that she’s going to “need to schedule a gyno for [her] right now” because she’ll “be pretty busy from now on.”
“She accepted the news and was like, ‘Oh, OK. You know be safe … and I’ll get that scheduled for you,’” she recalled. “I guess she goes back down to sit at the table with the family friends that are there. She’s silent … like catatonic.”
Ilona joked that her mom “didn’t sleep a wink that night” whereas she was all giddy.
“She’s always been that way. We can talk to her about pretty much anything to the point where I’m like, ‘I probably shouldn’t have shared that,’” she explained.
While Ilona feels like she shouldn’t have divulged that information, her sisters both seemed to agree it was a good thing.
“She stepped up and helped and she got you the appointments,” Olivia noted before Adrianna, 25, jumped in, adding that her mother was “making sure her daughter is healthy.”
Ilona added that “it’s special to have that sort of relationship with your mom.”
The Olympian is so close with her family that it inspired her to include her sisters in a new podcast “House of Maher,” in which the trio will discuss Ilona’s life in the public eye in addition to athletes and pop culture.
“I’ve always believed in showing up as your full, authentic self whether that’s on the rugby pitch, on social media, or now, in the podcast world,” Ilona told People in March. “And my sisters Olivia and Adrianna always bring out the best, most authentic version of me — you wouldn’t believe how much we laughed on set. This show is about just showing up as yourself and having fun while doing it.”
