Jurassic World Rebirth Goes Back to Basics in 1st Trailer

The trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth is here — and it is epic.

The first trailer for the fourth Jurassic World film was released on Wednesday, February 5, offering a look at stars Jonathan Bailey and Scarlett Johansson in the upcoming film as they fight to survive the most dangerous dinosaurs.

The sneak peek reveals that only a limited number of dinosaurs are left but three of them hold the key to a potentially life-saving drug. Covert operations expert Zora Bennett (Johansson) tries to secure the genetic material from the dinosaurs but her efforts end with her getting stranded with a civilian family on an island that holds a secret kept from humanity.

Rebirth will serve as a clean break from the original Jurassic World trilogy, which launched in 2015 with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as the leads. In the new film, Bailey, 36, stars as paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis, while Johansson portrays covert operations specialist Zora Bennett.

In addition to Bailey and Johansson, the all-new cast includes Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Screenwriter David Koepp, who penned the original Jurassic Park screenplay — as well as 1997’s The Lost World: Jurassic Park — returned to write the script for Rebirth after previously declining to write the first Jurassic World film.

Ahead of the trailer’s release, director Gareth Edwards discussed his determination to bring the essence of Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park movie to Jurassic World Rebirth. In a December 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, he shared that while he “can’t speak for Universal,” making Jurassic World Rebirth “did feel like a new trilogy, in a way.”

“I’m not sure what [the studio’s] plans are, but it felt like the beginning of a brand-new chapter in this franchise,” he told the outlet, calling Rebirth “a giant love letter to Steven Spielberg and his earlier films,” including Jaws.

Jurassic Park did lead the way with computer graphics, but I feel like we got lost along the way with the arms race to a spectacle,” Edwards said at the time. “Jurassic actually only had just a few dozen VFX shots in it, and it’s such a powerful film.”

Scarlett Johansson was all in for Jurassic World, especially after reading the script. “The script is so incredible,” the actress, 36, said in an interview with ComicBook.com published on Monday, June 24. “David Koepp wrote it. He returned after, like, 30 years to write the script. He’s so passionate about it, which is so awesome.” […]

He continued, “So, it was trying to go back to all those tricks and ideas that tease the audience, that creates suspense and tension that get you on the edge of your seat. I just wanted to create that feeling I had when I was young of being in awe of these things.”

Per the studio’s official synopsis, the film takes place five years after the events of 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, with Johansson’s Bennett contracted to lead a secret mission to obtain life-saving genetic material from the three biggest living creatures on earth, but Bennett’s mission is complicated when her and her team encounter a civilian family who have been stranded on the dinosaur-infested island.

Johansson, for her part, has starred in her fair share of multi-million dollar franchises, and is excited to make her splash in the Jurassic cinematic universe. “I’ve been trying to get into this franchise in any possible way for over 10 years,” Johansson told Comicbook.com in June 2024. “I’m like, ‘I’ll die in the first five minutes! I can get eaten by whatever! I’ll do the craft service!’ I’ll do anything for it. The fact that it’s happened in this way, at this time, just is actually unbelievable. I can’t believe it.”

Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2, 2025.
