Abigail Spencer was thrilled to participate in her friend Meghan Markle’s With Love, Meghan series — but didn’t realize that she’d be joining in on the culinary action.
“It was so funny when she told me she was going to teach me how to cook fish. ‘I’m sorry, you’re what?’” Spencer, 43, told Hello! in an interview published on Wednesday, March 19. “I didn’t know where anything was in that kitchen. I felt like I was just doggy paddling and she was doing butterfly kicks!”
She joked, “Meghan is about to win a gold medal and I’m just doggy paddling above the surface!”
Meghan, 43, shared her enthusiasm for cooking, gardening, DIY and more lifestyle topics in her With Love docuseries, which premiered on Netflix earlier this month. Spencer and the duo’s pal Kelly McKee Zafjen made a cameo in a penultimate episode.
“Kelly’s a great cook, [but] Abby has other strengths!” Meghan teased during the scene, later joking that Spencer was “the head of morale” on Suits. (While Meghan starred as paralegal-turned-attorney Rachel Zane on the legal drama, Spencer had a recurring role as lawyer Dana “Scottie” Scott.)
While reliving her With Love cameo with Hello!, Spencer revealed that she was “dying laughing” over Meghan’s candor.

“I really was dying laughing because she said, ‘Kelly and Abigail are coming over,’ and then she said, ‘You know, Kelly’s such a good cook, she’s so good, and Abby’s got other strengths,’” Spencer said. “That is so true! [Mine] do tend to be of the ‘While you’re cooking, I will serve you champagne’ type.”
The two women had been friends long before Meghan became the Duchess of Sussex upon marrying Prince Harry in 2018. They first met in an audition room in 2007, growing closer as they both worked on USA Network’s Suits.
“We have a very private friendship,” Spencer added to Hello! on Wednesday. “So choosing to let people in on part of that is … very private, but I’m glad that we got to share a little bit of it.”
After the success of With Love, Netflix already renewed the series for a second season. Spencer, meanwhile, has enjoyed seeing her friend blossom onscreen while sharing her best hosting tips.
“People will really get an authentic look at the woman that I love and know,” Spencer told People in January. “Also, you’re gonna learn a lot.”
According to the Timeless alum, she was just “so grateful” to come aboard and learn new tricks from Meghan.
