Michelle Trachtenberg and her boyfriend, talent agent Jay Cohen, had a sweet relationship ahead of her sudden death at age 39.
“She was still together with her boyfriend, whom she spoke of highly and lovingly,” a source exclusively tells Us. “They seemed to have a wonderful relationship.”
A second insider, meanwhile, reveals that Cohen was “a huge support system” for Trachtenberg.
Us previously broke the news in October 2020 that Trachtenberg had been dating Cohen, her rep at Gersh Agency, for more than one year. Since then, the actress frequently shared relationship updates via social media.
“Happy Valentine’s Day to the man who sits still long enough for me to paint his face,” Trachtenberg wrote via Instagram on February 14, sharing a throwback Halloween portrait.
Trachtenberg died nearly two weeks later.
“It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away,” the Gossip Girl alum’s rep told Us in a statement on Wednesday, February 26. “The family requests privacy for their loss. There are no further details at this time.”
In addition to Cohen, who has yet to publicly address his partner’s passing, Trachtenberg is survived by her parents and her sister.
Trachtenberg had been found unconscious by mom Lana inside her New York City apartment on Wednesday.
“On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at approximately 0801 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an aided individual at 1 Columbus Place, within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct,’” local law enforcement officers said in a statement. “Upon arrival, officers observed a 39-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the victim deceased. Criminality is not suspected. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.”
A cause of death has since been listed as “undetermined” as the actress’ family objected to an autopsy.
Following Trachtenberg’s death, many of her former costars have taken to social media to share their condolences.
“She was electricity. You knew when she entered a room because the vibration changed,” Blake Lively wrote via Instagram Story, referring to Trachtenberg’s Georgina.“Everything she did, she did 200%. She laughed the fullest at someone’s joke, she faced authority head-on when she felt something was wrong, she cared deeply about her work, she was proud to be a part of this community and industry as painful as it could be sometimes, she was fiercely loyal to her friends and brave for those she loved, she was big and bold and distinctly herself.”
Sarah Michelle Gellar, for her part, captioned her own tribute with lines from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Gellar, 47, and Trachtenberg played siblings Buffy and Dawn, respectively, on the supernatural series.)
“’Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you,’” Gellar wrote on Thursday, February 27, before quoting Dawn’s line from the musical episode. “‘The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you.’”
