Costa Rican authorities have released Miller Gardner’s body, Us Weekly can confirm.
The Judicial Investigation Agency’s Press Office tell Us that Miller’s body was removed on Wednesday, March 26, but that, “out of respect for the family it has not been disclose who it was released to.”
Us has learned that, in Costa Rica, a body cannot be released from the morgue unless a family member or a legal representative submits a formal request.
The OIJ office further confirmed to Us that Miller’s autopsy results will be publicly ready in approximately two months.
Miller, the 14-year-old son of MLB alum Brett Gardner and wife Jessica Gardner, died earlier this month while on the family’s trip to Costa Rica.
“With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation,” Brett, 41, and Jessica, wrote in a statement shared via the New York Yankees’ X account on March 23. “We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”
They added, “Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day.”
Brett, who played his entire MLB career with the Yankees until retiring in 2021, and Jessica also share son Hunter. In their social media statement, they further thanked supporters for their kindness after Miller’s sudden death.
“We are so thankful to all who have reached out to offer support and encouragement during this difficult time and we are confident our faith, family, and friends will help us navigate this unimaginable loss,” the couple concluded in their statement. “Our prayers go out to Miller’s teammates and friends, as well as to all other families who have lost a child far too soon as we share their grief.”
Miller’s preliminary cause of death was ruled as asphyxia before investigators later clarified that his airway had not been obstructed. It is also possible that Miller died following a bout of food poisoning.
The Gardners have not further addressed Miller’s passing but have been supported by the baseball community.
“Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner,” the Yankees wrote in a March social media statement. “Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn’t just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys. Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our enduring support while understanding their desire for privacy.”
The New York-based team also held a moment of silence in Miller’s honor during Opening Day the next week.
