Say Anything cemented itself as a rom-com classic the moment John Cusack pulled out his boombox pressed play on “In Your Eyes.”
The 1989 film followed the romance between Lloyd Dobler (Cusack) and Diane Court (Ione Skye) upon their high school graduation. Lloyd was an average student while Diane was the class valedictorian. While it seems they do not have a lot in common, Lloyd — who was unsure of life after school — decided to pursue Diane much to the chagrin of her father, played by John Mahoney.
While Skye and Cusack played love interests on-screen, the actress later revealed that she and her Say Anything costar hooked up years after the premiere. In her 2025 memoir, Say Everything, Skye wrote that she and Cusack got together following her divorce from Beastie Boys’ Adam Horovitz.
During a March 2025 interview with People, Skye shared that she let Cusack read a draft of her book. He later texted her, “You made the experience sound so meh! It wasn’t ‘meh’ for me.”
“I was like, I’m telling a story, and it was more about how all of our chemistry was in our working together and stimulating each other’s minds, not sleeping together!” Skye told the outlet at the time. “I felt a little bad, but, oh well.”
