Star Trek Online Classic Film Bundle Ark Royal Shangri La Kerala

As part of Star Trek Online‘s ongoing 15th anniversary celebration, the game is adding a new bundle of ship skins inspired by the era of the original Star Trek films. But honestly? The trailer might be as fun as getting the ships themselves.

Today, to coincide with the console launch of STO‘s latest season, Unveiled, Arc Games and DECA Games announced a new ship bundle that is launching on PC as part of the game’s ongoing celebrations of its 15th anniversary. The bundle collects four new ships—”Tier 6″ versions of the Pioneer II Pilot Heavy Frigate, inspired by a vessel from STO‘s original-series-themed “Agents of Yesterday” expansion; the Ark Royal Intel Carrier, based on the ship of the same name that appeared in the 2000 video game Starfleet Command II; the Kerala Temporal Battlecruiser, inspired by the Shepard-class from Star Trek: Discovery; and the Shangri-La Command Warship, inspired by the Bill Krause design used for the Neo-Constitution-class in Star Trek: Picard‘s final season—as well as access to the Theseus Miracle Worker Destroyer, a ship from IDW’s Star Trek comic series previously only available as a random reward in lockboxes. Each ship includes access to skins inspired by the visual aesthetic of the original series-era Star Trek films, from The Motion Picture to The Undiscovered Country, as well as skins inspired by the 25th-century setting of Star Trek Online.

But as fun as all the the ships actually are, STO‘s trailer for the bundle itself might be even more delightful. A nearly five-minute short film highlighting each of the vessels in action in those aforementioned late 23rd Century aesthetics, it’s less of a video game trailer and more of a short film evoking the style and aesthetic of those beloved classic Trek films, pitting the ships against Romulan warbirds and Orion raiders, and even a cheeky nod towards the classic “no-win scenario” of the Kobayashi Maru test.

Turns out the test might have been a little easier if you just show up with a whole task force of Starfleet ships to blow things up, but at least they look retro-cool while doing it! It’s a very cute way to show off a loving tribute to that era of Star Trek filmmaking.

The classic film bundle, which includes a host of bonus consumables as well as ground-based gear inspired by the security armor and phasers used in The Motion Picture, launches today for Star Trek Online on PC at a discounted rate of 13,125 Zen, the game’s premium currency (the equivalent of approximately $130), before the price raises to 17,500 (approximately $175) Zen from April 1. The four brand-new ships will also available to purchase individually at a rate of 2,400 ($24) and later 3,000 ($30) Zen.
