Stephen Espinoza revealed that WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis wants to fight “top tier” opposition moving forward after his title defense against Lamont Roach on March 1st.
Top Tier Targets
Espinoza says that could be Shakur Stevenson and a rematch with Ryan Garcia, which he would consider “top tier.” He didn’t mention other fighters, like Keyshawn Davis, William Zepeda, Raymond Muratalla, or Andy Cruz.
Stephen is focusing on fighters that are well known to the boxing public and would move the needle. Ryan Garcia would bring his massive social media following for a rematch against Gervonta. Espinoza says the weight would have to be decided because Ryan fights at 140.
He’s probably not going to agree to any weight stipulations Tank would ask for after being burned last time when he foolishly agreed to a catchweight and a rehydration clause.
“He doesn’t want to do anything less than top tier. I think he’s going to insist on a fight like Shakur. Something of that magnitude,” said Stephen Espinoza to iFL TV about what type of fight Gervonta Davis will want after he defeats Lamont Roach on March 1st.
“Maybe it’s Shakur. Maybe it’s a Ryan Garcia rematch or something like that. I don’t think we’ll see him in anything short of those types of fights moving forward,” said Espinoza.
Fan Frustration
Tank Davis is going to need to prove that he’s willing to fight top-tier opposition because fans aren’t going to take him at his word. He’s been fighting the same type of soft jobs his entire 12-year career, and people aren’t going to believe he can change his ways.
Boxing fans have grown tired of seeing Tank Davis Cherry pick opposition that is no threat to beating him.
While he’s stayed unbeaten using that tried and true method, the downside is that it’s limited his growth and kept him from being more popular. He certainly can continue to take soft opposition, but he’s not going to bring in big PPV numbers.
